Hi all! It's Week 10; this week we are hearing from Helen Harwood. I met Helen through my studies at Church Mission Society. I am grateful for her support, both as I adjusted to being a student again and in her willingness to share through Hope Hour too. Her words on praising God in all situations have been a powerful reminder and encouragement to me this week. I am sure they will be to you too!
In Helen's words...
"I don’t find it hard to find God in day-to-day life. I work for a Christian organisation (Church Mission Society) so I get a lot of spiritual input at work. I am also a youth group leader in my C of E church, where I get to hear amazing wisdom from the young people in the group. Recently our church ran a Prayer Space and it was such an honour to run one of our prayer stations with the primary-aged kids. So, there is no lack of opportunities for me to hear from, and about, God!
However, recently, God has been speaking to me in the difficult situations in my own life. A very small fall (the dog pulled me over!) left me temporarily with a bad arm and having to have physiotherapy. Having recently re-read the book ‘Prison To Praise’ by Merlin Carothers, I’m learning to praise God in the midst of difficulties. The book has reminded me to praise God in all situations, and for all situations. This is something I can do, just for myself, not for others or on behalf of others.
This activity of praise has led me, even in difficult times, to find a kind of peace. It’s very strange how praise and thanksgiving works. I have heard that it helps you ‘… to fall in love with the life you have!’ So, I am finding God in praise, not always easy but always worthwhile. Not something I can tell others to do, or expect them to do. And not something I always manage to do either! But when I do, I find God waiting for me there!"
Helen is a wife, mother to two amazing children, an admin assistant and member of the local C of E Church. Her home includes a dog, a cat, and three rats. She loves mission, socialising with friends, and chocolate!
