WEEK 23: THE FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI

Author: Janet

Dear all, we are at week 23! The year is flying by and I can't quite believe we have hit June already. This week we have a reflection on the Feast of Corpus Christi from Janet. The mystery of communion is something that I am sure lots of us have pondered on during our walks with Christ. Janet shares some beautiful thoughts on how communion not only binds us together but inspires us to action too...

In Janet's words...

Last Thursday was the Feast of Corpus Christi, which honours the institution of the Holy Eucharist. The term Corpus Christi, is the Latin for Body of Christ. It was very fitting therefore that the preacher at yesterday’s Communion service spoke about the feast and the importance of this sacred meal, to the followers of Jesus.

Communion bread and wine

As I listened to the unfolding message, I was reminded of not taking for granted this precious gift, demonstrating God’s infinite and unconditional love. The simple, yet complex meal of bread and wine, that Jesus invites us to partake in, representing his body and blood, in remembrance of his love and sacrifice, isn’t intended to be just a symbolic ritual. It is an invitation.

So, what is it that we are invited to? John, in 6:51, quotes Jesus, ‘I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever;’ As I ponder on this, I wonder is that it?

As followers of Christ it is, of course, pivotal to have this spiritual union with him, for it is what binds us together, with him and each other, it nourishes our souls and offers a deep sense of belonging. The preacher went on; Holy Communion is also a transformative union. We seek and are granted forgiveness and redemption.

However, I was also reminded that there is much more to this transformation, it is not passive, but a call to action. Having received the Eucharist with reverence and love, we are compelled to reach out to others, to do as Jesus did. To offer all those around us, in and outside church, compassion, a helping hand, a listening ear, to respond to others' needs.

In short, we are commissioned to love and serve those around us, as we realise and respond to all Jesus has done for us, with thanksgiving and remembrance. As I left church, I have a renewed love for my saviour and a refreshed desire to love him and all his people.

Janet is blessed by an ever increasing family and, a mission to make sure all know how much Jesus loves them by word and deed.
